HEX17 (also known as Neumifil) is a first-in-class, protein-based broad-spectrum antiviral drug developed for the prophylaxis and treatment of respiratory viral infections. It consists of a hexavalent carbohydrate-binding module (CBM) with high affinity for sialic acids found on the terminal branches of glycans on host cell receptors. By binding to these sialic acids, HEX17 blocks viral engagement with host receptors and inhibits infection by a wide range of respiratory viruses—including influenza viruses (IFV), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), coronaviruses (CoV), and human rhinoviruses (HRV). This mechanism reduces the risk of developing antiviral resistance. The drug is administered intranasally as a spray and has demonstrated efficacy in both preclinical models and Phase 2 clinical trials, showing significant reductions in incidence and severity of symptomatic influenza infection. Ongoing studies are evaluating its potential to prevent exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma[1][3][6][7].
