Overview

Hexachlorophene is a chlorinated bisphenol antiseptic and topical antibacterial cleanser primarily used to clean the skin before surgery and to prevent or treat skin infections. It acts as a bacteriostatic agent with activity mainly against staphylococci and other gram-positive bacteria. Its mechanism of action involves disrupting the bacterial cell membrane at higher concentrations and inhibiting bacterial growth at lower concentrations. Cumulative antibacterial effects develop with repeated use. Hexachlorophene is available by prescription for topical application only and should not be used in infants due to toxicity concerns.
