The hexane fraction of American ginseng (HAG) is a lipid-soluble extract derived from *Panax quinquefolius* that has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer activity in preclinical models. Research indicates that HAG is more potent than the whole American ginseng extract in treating dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis and preventing azoxymethane (AOM)/DSS-induced colon cancer in mice. Its mechanism of action involves the induction of apoptosis in macrophages, T cells, and human epithelial colon cancer cells (HCT-116). Furthermore, HAG modulates microRNA profiles by increasing the levels of the tumor suppressor miRNA-16 and decreasing the levels of oncogenic miRNAs, including miRNA-21 and miRNA-155. It is primarily developed and studied by researchers at the University of South Carolina and the National Research Council of Canada.
