Overview

Hexapropymate is a sedative-hypnotic drug belonging to the carbamate class. It was primarily used in the 1970s and 1980s for the treatment of insomnia before being replaced by newer agents with improved safety profiles[1][7]. Its pharmacological effects are similar to those of barbiturates, acting as a central nervous system depressant. The mechanism of action is believed to involve positive allosteric modulation of Gamma-aminobutyric acid type A receptor (GABA_A receptor), enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission in the brain and resulting in sedation and muscle relaxation[6]. Hexapropymate was available without prescription under brand names such as Merinax (notably in Belgium)[4]. Due to its risk profile—including severe toxicity and potential for fatal overdose—it has largely been withdrawn from clinical use[5].
