Overview
The hexavalent reassortant rotavirus live vaccine is an oral, live-attenuated vaccine developed by the Wuhan Institute of Biological Products (a subsidiary of China National Biotec Group/Sinopharm). It is designed to provide broad protection against rotavirus gastroenteritis, the leading cause of severe diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide. The vaccine utilizes a bovine rotavirus (UK strain) backbone reassorted with human rotavirus surface proteins representing six common serotypes: G1, G2, G3, G4, G8, and G9. This hexavalent approach aims to offer wider coverage than existing monovalent or pentavalent vaccines, particularly targeting the G8 and G9 strains which have become increasingly prevalent in certain regions. By mimicking natural infection without causing disease, it induces mucosal and systemic immunity against the most prevalent rotavirus strains.
