Overview

Hexidine is a topical antiseptic and antimicrobial solution, primarily recognized as a brand of chlorhexidine gluconate (often at a 0.2% concentration). It belongs to the biguanide class of agents and is characterized by its broad-spectrum efficacy against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as certain fungi and enveloped viruses. The drug works as a cationic molecule that binds to the negatively charged components of the microbial cell wall and membrane, leading to osmotic instability, leakage of intracellular contents, and subsequent cell death. Hexidine is most commonly utilized as an oral rinse for the treatment and prevention of dental conditions such as gingivitis and periodontitis, but its active ingredient is also formulated for skin decolonization, surgical site preparation, and the prevention of neonatal infections such as omphalitis. While highly effective, long-term oral use is associated with side effects such as dental staining and altered taste perception.
