Overview

Cevira (hexyl aminolevulinate) is a photodynamic therapy (PDT) product designed for the non-invasive treatment of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSIL) of the cervix. Developed by Photocure and licensed to Asieris Pharmaceuticals (as APL-1702), the treatment involves the application of hexyl aminolevulinate, a prodrug that preferentially accumulates in neoplastic cells and is converted into the photosensitizer protoporphyrin IX (PpIX). Upon activation by a specific wavelength of red light delivered by an integrated cervical device, PpIX induces the formation of reactive oxygen species, leading to selective necrosis of the precancerous lesions while sparing healthy tissue. This approach aims to provide an alternative to surgical procedures like LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure), potentially preserving cervical integrity and reducing complications for women of reproductive age.
