HFA-152a (1,1-difluoroethane) is a low global warming potential (GWP) propellant being developed by GSK as a sustainable alternative to the current HFA-134a propellant used in pressurized metered-dose inhalers (pMDIs). With a GWP of 124, HFA-152a is approximately 10 times less impactful on the environment than HFA-134a. GSK is transitioning its respiratory portfolio, most notably Ventolin (salbutamol), to this propellant to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of its inhaler products, which currently account for nearly half of the company's total global carbon emissions. Clinical evaluation in Phase 1 studies has demonstrated that HFA-152a is safe and well-tolerated in adults with mild asthma, showing no evidence of inducing bronchoconstriction or airway sensitivity reactions, with a safety profile comparable to existing standards.
