Overview
HFT-290 is a once-daily transdermal patch formulation of fentanyl citrate developed by Hisamitsu Pharmaceutical. Utilizing Hisamitsu's proprietary Transdermal Drug Delivery System (TDDS) technology, the patch is designed to provide sustained release of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid, to maintain stable plasma concentrations over a 24-hour period. Fentanyl acts primarily as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor in the central nervous system, inhibiting ascending pain pathways and altering the perception of and response to pain. HFT-290 was specifically developed to improve patient compliance and convenience compared to multi-day patches. It is approved in Japan (under the brand name Fentos) for the management of both cancer-related pain and chronic non-cancer pain that requires long-term opioid treatment.
