Overview

HI-1-164 is an oral, inactivated (killed) whole-cell bacterial vaccine/immunotherapy derived from nontypeable *Haemophilus influenzae* (NTHi) strain 164. Developed by the Australian company Hunter Immunology, it was designed to prevent acute bronchitis and respiratory exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other mild-to-moderate airway diseases. The vaccine is administered orally to stimulate mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT), leading to the induction of NTHi-specific T cells and IgG antibodies. This immune response aims to reduce the bacterial load of NTHi in the airways, thereby decreasing the frequency and severity of inflammatory episodes associated with NTHi colonization.
