Overview

HI-1-164-AS (also known as HI-164) is an orally administered, enteric-coated vaccine tablet containing formalin-inactivated, whole-cell non-typeable *Haemophilus influenzae* (NTHi, isolate 164). Originally developed by Hunter Immunology and subsequently progressed by Bioxyne, Mariposa Health, and Respien, the vaccine is designed to stimulate mucosal immunity and reduce the frequency and severity of acute bronchitis and bacterial exacerbations in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and other chronic airway diseases. By targeting the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) upon oral administration, HI-1-164-AS drives a specific T-cell response (involving Th1 and Th17 cells) that promotes intrabronchial phagocytosis and down-regulates airway inflammation, thereby addressing persistent bacterial colonization without the need for chronic antibiotic therapy.
