Overview

**Hibiscus asper extract** refers to extracts prepared from the leaves (and sometimes calyx) of the *Hibiscus asper* plant, most often using methanol or water as solvents. The extract contains bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenolics, saponins, terpenoids, alkaloids, tannins, glycosides, and essential fatty acids such as linoleic acid and methyl esters. Preclinical studies have shown the methanolic and aqueous extracts possess significant anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, neuroprotective, anxiolytic, antidepressant, and antimalarial activities. Mechanisms of action involve inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis and histamine-mediated inflammation, antioxidant free radical scavenging, and—according to molecular docking studies—potential direct inhibition of malarial parasite enzymes. Extracts are traditionally used for inflammatory conditions (including rheumatoid arthritis), neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, and as part of malaria management as well as broad ethnomedicinal uses for jaundice, joint pain, anemia, abscesses, urethritis, skin infections, and male infertility.
