Overview
Hibisol is a topical antiseptic solution containing chlorhexidine gluconate and isopropyl alcohol, originally developed by Regent Medical (now part of Mölnlycke Health Care). It is primarily indicated for the disinfection of skin prior to invasive medical procedures and as a hand rub for healthcare professionals to prevent cross-infection. The drug's mechanism of action involves the cationic binding of chlorhexidine to bacterial cell membranes, leading to their disruption, while isopropyl alcohol provides rapid antimicrobial activity through the denaturation of microbial proteins. Following a name change, the product is also marketed as 'HiBi Liquid Hand Rub+'. It has been evaluated in Phase 4 dermatological safety studies to compare its skin irritation potential against other antiseptic formulations using transepidermal water loss (TEWL) assessments.
