Overview

Hidrosmin is a synthetic bioflavonoid and a member of the flavone class, used primarily as a phlebotonic (capillary stabilizing agent) for the short-term relief of symptoms associated with chronic venous insufficiency, such as oedema, pain, heaviness, and varicose veins. It is marketed under several brand names including Venosmil. Hidrosmin acts by reducing capillary permeability and fragility, increasing red blood cell deformability and blood viscosity, inducing gradual contraction of smooth muscle in vein walls, and enhancing lymphatic flow. Its mechanism may involve inhibition of catechol-O-methyltransferase leading to reduced degradation of catecholamines; it also inhibits NF-kB signaling and stimulates endothelial nitric oxide synthase activity to improve vascular function. Clinical studies have shown efficacy in reducing oedema and improving symptoms in chronic venous disease[1][2][6][7].
