HIF-1a siRNA refers to a class of small interfering RNA (siRNA) molecules designed to silence the expression of the Hypoxia-Inducible Factor-1 alpha (HIF-1α) gene. HIF-1α is a critical transcription factor that mediates the cellular response to low oxygen (hypoxia), regulating genes involved in glycolysis, angiogenesis, and cell survival. In the context of oncology, HIF-1α is often overexpressed in solid tumors and hematological malignancies, contributing to tumor growth, metastasis, and resistance to chemotherapy and radiation. By utilizing RNA interference (RNAi), HIF-1a siRNA can effectively downregulate HIF-1α protein levels, thereby inhibiting tumor progression and sensitizing cancer cells to therapeutic agents. Various delivery systems, including nanoparticles and viral or bacterial vectors, are being explored in preclinical research to improve the stability and targeted delivery of these siRNA molecules.
