The High Fiber supplement (HFS) developed by Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is a specialized nutritional intervention designed to modulate the gut microbiome in patients with Parkinson's disease. The formulation consists of a precise blend of soluble fibers, specifically inulin and Fibersol-2 (a digestion-resistant maltodextrin), and insoluble fibers sourced from oat, corn, wheat, and sorghum brans. Administered orally as a drink, the supplement acts as a prebiotic substrate for gut microbiota, promoting the production of metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials to investigate its impact on the bacterial, viral, and fungal populations of the gut and their subsequent influence on Parkinson-like pathology and the gut-brain axis.
