Overview

High gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) safflower oil is a specialized vegetable oil derived from genetically modified safflower (*Carthamus tinctorius*) plants, engineered to produce high levels of the omega-6 fatty acid GLA. Developed primarily by Arcadia Biosciences, this oil typically contains up to 40% GLA, a significantly higher concentration than traditional sources like evening primrose oil (approx. 10%) or borage oil (approx. 20%). GLA is a critical intermediate in the metabolism of essential fatty acids; once ingested, it is rapidly converted to dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA). DGLA serves as a substrate for the synthesis of anti-inflammatory series-1 prostaglandins, such as prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), and competitively inhibits the oxygenation of arachidonic acid into pro-inflammatory series-2 prostaglandins and series-4 leukotrienes. This oil is primarily utilized as a dietary supplement and has been investigated for its role in preventing weight regain following weight loss, managing inflammatory skin conditions like atopic dermatitis, and supporting overall metabolic health.
