Overview

**High molecular weight sodium hyaluronate** is the sodium salt form of hyaluronic acid, a long-chain glycosaminoglycan naturally present in human connective tissues. High molecular weight formulations, such as the one found in ORTHOVISC, possess a viscoelastic property permitting their use as intra-articular injections for supplementation of synovial fluid, leading to improved joint lubrication and shock absorption. The mechanism involves providing mechanical support and possibly modulating the inflammatory response in the joint. ORTHOVISC contains sodium hyaluronate extracted from rooster combs, with a molecular weight ranging from 1 to 2.9 million daltons, delivered as a 15 mg/mL solution for injection[1]. Its primary indication is pain management in osteoarthritis of the knee in patients unresponsive to conservative therapies[1][2][5].
