Overview

Highly agglutinative staphylococcin (HAS) is a biologic drug composed of a mixture of culture filtrates from Staphylococcus aureus, with the primary active ingredient being staphylococcal enterotoxin C (SEC), a well-characterized bacterial superantigen. HAS has been used clinically as an immunomodifier and biological response modifier in cancer therapy, particularly in China. Its mechanism involves potent activation of T lymphocytes by cross-linking T-cell receptors and MHC class II molecules outside the peptide-binding groove, leading to massive cytokine release (including IL-1, IL-2, IL-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ) and broad immune stimulation. It has been used as adjunctive therapy for various tumors such as advanced breast cancer and malignant pleural effusion associated with lung cancer. Side effects include fever and local pain due to its strong immunostimulatory properties[1][3][4].
