This combination regimen is used in controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) protocols for in vitro fertilization (IVF), specifically studied by the Riyadh Fertility and Reproductive Health center for women with poor ovarian response. The regimen consists of highly purified urinary follicle stimulating hormone (HPuFSH), which provides exogenous FSH to stimulate the development of multiple ovarian follicles, and a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist, cetrorelix. Cetrorelix acts by competitively blocking GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, thereby preventing premature luteinizing hormone (LH) surges that could lead to untimely ovulation. This specific protocol is often evaluated as a standard of care against which adjunctive therapies, such as growth hormone (somatropin), are tested to improve clinical outcomes in patients identified as "poor responders."
