HighOsmo is a trial-specific, hyperosmolar cardiopulmonary-bypass priming solution evaluated by Umeå University for its potential effect on postoperative acute kidney injury in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The 966 mOsm formulation used in the HighOsmo arm contains Ringer-acetate, mannitol, sodium chloride, and heparin. It is administered through the cardiopulmonary-bypass circuit; mannitol and added sodium chloride raise prime osmolality, while heparin provides anticoagulation during extracorporeal circulation.
