Drug intelligence / Profile preview
hiHep bioartificial liver therapy is a cell-based extracorporeal device designed to provide temporary hepatic support for patients with acute or post-hepatectomy liver failure. The system utilizes human-induced hepatocytes (hiHeps), which are generated by transdifferentiating human fibroblasts into functional hepatocyte-like cells. These cells are cultured under GMP conditions and integrated into a bioreactor to perform essential hepatic functions such as ammonia detoxification and albumin synthesis. The primary mechanism of action is the replacement and supplementation of lost or impaired hepatic metabolic activity, supporting native liver regeneration and improving survival outcomes in preclinical models and early clinical studies. The technology was developed by Hexaell Biotech, based on research from the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at the Chinese Academy of Sciences[1][6][7][8]. Its main indication is for acute or post-hepatectomy liver failure.
