Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hilestrol is a nutraceutical supplement developed and marketed by MG Lifecare LLP, containing a standardized Bergamot Polyphenolic Fraction (BPF) as its active ingredient. Sourced from Italian bergamot citrus fruit through a patented adsorption process, BPF contains a unique profile of flavonoids and glycosides, including neoeriocitrin, neohesperidin, naringin, rutin, neodesmin, rhoifolin, and poncirin. Hilestrol is primarily indicated for the improvement of lipid profiles in patients with cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders, such as type 2 diabetes. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) by blocking the substrate site while sparing the catalytic site, which results in increased HDL cholesterol and decreased LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Additionally, it provides glucose-lowering effects beneficial for diabetic patients and is marketed as a safe adjunct to statin therapy.
