Overview

Hillchol (BBV131) is an inactivated, whole-cell oral cholera vaccine (OCV) developed by Bharat Biotech International Limited in collaboration with Hilleman Laboratories. It is designed to provide active immunization against cholera caused by *Vibrio cholerae* serogroup O1. The vaccine utilizes the Hikojima strain, a unique hybrid strain that naturally expresses both Inaba and Ogawa serotypes, which simplifies the manufacturing process and reduces production costs compared to traditional multi-strain OCVs. Hillchol was developed to address the global shortage of cholera vaccines and has demonstrated non-inferiority in immunogenicity and safety to the existing OCV Shanchol in Phase III clinical trials. It received regulatory approval in India in 2024 and is intended for use in both endemic and outbreak settings to prevent cholera infections.
