Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hirudo, specifically referring to the freeze-dried powder of *Hirudinaria manillensis* (Philippine leech), is a traditional animal-derived biologic developed and marketed by XianShi Pharmaceutical Group under the brand name Feizhitong (菲至通). The product is rich in hirudin, a potent natural anticoagulant that functions as a direct thrombin inhibitor. By binding with high affinity to both the active site and exosite I of thrombin, it prevents the conversion of fibrinogen to fibrin, thereby inhibiting thrombus formation and improving microcirculation. It is approved in China for the treatment of conditions associated with blood stasis and circulatory obstruction, such as hyperlipidemia and cardiovascular diseases, within the framework of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
