Hispidulin is a naturally occurring flavone (4',5,7-trihydroxy-6-methoxyflavone) found in various plants such as Grindelia argentina and Salvia species. It acts as a potent ligand at the benzodiazepine site of the Gamma aminobutyric acid type A receptor (GABA A receptor), functioning as a partial positive allosteric modulator. Hispidulin enhances GABA-induced chloride currents at several Gamma aminobutyric acid type A receptor (GABA A receptor) subtypes and can cross the blood–brain barrier. In animal models, it has demonstrated anticonvulsant activity comparable to diazepam and shows potential antiepileptic effects. Beyond its CNS activity, hispidulin exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antiproliferative (antitumor), antifungal, antithrombotic (platelet aggregation inhibition), and apoptosis-inducing properties through mechanisms involving caspase activation and AMPK stimulation[1][3][5][6][7][8].
