Drug intelligence / Profile preview
HIST-CEL is a novel bioactive, histone-functionalized nanofiber wound dressing designed for rapid haemostatic control in trauma. Developed by researchers at the University of Liverpool, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and Southeast University, HIST-CEL consists of extracellular histones conjugated to electrospun cellulose nanofibers via carbodiimide coupling. Extracellular histones act as potent procoagulant mediators by directly binding to prothrombin (facilitating its cleavage by factor Xa to generate thrombin) and activating platelets and neutrophils via Toll-like receptors (TLR2 and TLR4), which triggers platelet activation and neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) induction. In preclinical models, HIST-CEL significantly reduced bleeding time without causing local or systemic toxicity, demonstrating potential as a next-generation haemostatic bandage for trauma-related hemorrhage.
