Histamine + benzyl alcohol is an investigational diagnostic formulation used for bronchial provocation testing. Histamine, the active component, is a biogenic amine that acts as a potent bronchoconstrictor by stimulating H1 receptors on airway smooth muscle. This effect is used clinically to measure bronchial hyperreactivity (BHR), a hallmark of asthma. In this specific preparation, benzyl alcohol is included as a preservative or stabilizer. The formulation was notably studied by Saint-Pierre University Hospital in a clinical trial (NCT02441374) to assess whether technicians with BHR could safely perform bronchial challenge tests without experiencing bronchoconstriction from passive environmental exposure to the histamine aerosol.
