Overview

Histamine dihydrochloride is the hydrochloride salt of histamine, a biogenic amine with immunomodulatory and antineoplastic properties. It is used as an adjunct in the prevention of relapse in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), particularly in combination with low-dose interleukin‑2 (IL‑2) during post-remission maintenance therapy. The drug acts by inhibiting reactive oxygen species formation via histamine H2 receptors on monocytes, thereby protecting natural killer and T cells from oxidative damage and enhancing immune-mediated killing of leukemic cells. In addition to its oncological use, it is also an FDA-approved active ingredient for topical analgesic products intended for temporary relief of minor muscle and joint pain associated with arthritis, backache, bruises, sprains, or strains[1][2][3][6][7].
