Histidinol is an amino alcohol and a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of the amino acid histidine. It is found in all living species from bacteria to humans and belongs to the class of organic compounds known as aralkylamines. In biological systems, it serves as a precursor that is oxidized to form histidine. Histidinol has been widely used in biochemical research as a substrate for enzyme studies (notably with histidinol dehydrogenase), and as a potent reversible inhibitor of protein synthesis in cultured human cells by competitively inhibiting the activation of histidine via inhibition of histidine--tRNA ligase activity[2][4][6]. It does not significantly affect cellular uptake of histidine but blocks its utilization during protein synthesis.
