HIV-1 DNA vaccine + protein vaccine is a combination immunization approach that uses both DNA plasmids encoding HIV-1 envelope proteins and recombinant HIV-1 envelope proteins to elicit enhanced immune responses against HIV-1. This approach combines the advantages of DNA vaccination (strong T-cell responses) with protein vaccination (robust antibody responses). The DNA component typically consists of plasmids encoding HIV-1 envelope glycoproteins, while the protein component consists of recombinant HIV-1 envelope proteins such as gp120 or gp140. The combination can be administered either as a prime-boost regimen (DNA followed by protein) or as co-administration (DNA and protein given simultaneously). Enhanced delivery methods such as electroporation are often used to improve cellular transfection of the DNA component. This combination approach has been shown to elicit higher antibody responses than either DNA or protein alone, with broader cross-neutralizing activity, while maintaining strong cellular immune responses.
