Remune (hiv-1 immunogen) is an investigational therapeutic vaccine developed by The Immune Response Corporation for the treatment of HIV-1 infection. It consists of a whole-killed HIV-1 virus (HZ321 isolate) that has been chemically inactivated and depleted of its gp120 envelope glycoprotein, formulated in an oil-based incomplete Freund's adjuvant (IFA). The vaccine is designed to enhance HIV-specific cell-mediated immune responses, particularly T-cell proliferation and Th1 cytokine production, to help control viral replication and slow disease progression. Despite extensive Phase II and Phase III clinical testing, including the large-scale REMUNE trial, the drug failed to demonstrate a significant clinical benefit on primary endpoints such as progression to AIDS or death, leading to the discontinuation of its development in the early 2000s.
