Overview

The HIV-1 rgp160 vaccine is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine candidate developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) for the prevention and therapeutic treatment of HIV-1 infection. The vaccine utilizes the recombinant HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp160, the precursor protein that is normally cleaved into gp120 and gp41. Produced using baculovirus or Vero cell expression systems, the vaccine is designed to elicit immune responses, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and T-cell mediated immunity, specifically targeting the viral envelope. Clinical trials, primarily conducted through the AIDS Vaccine Clinical Trials Network in the 1990s, evaluated various formulations derived from different HIV-1 strains (such as IIIB, LAI, and MN) and different adjuvants like alum to assess safety, immunogenicity, and delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) reactions.
