HIV-1 SF-2 p24 is a recombinant protein subunit vaccine designed to elicit an immune response against the p24 capsid protein of the HIV-1 SF-2 strain. Developed by Chiron Vaccines (now part of GSK) in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the vaccine was primarily evaluated as part of "prime-boost" vaccination regimens. In these studies, it was typically used as a booster injection following a primary immunization with a viral vector, such as the canarypox-based ALVAC-HIV (vCP205). To enhance immunogenicity, the p24 protein is formulated with the MF59 adjuvant, a proprietary oil-in-water emulsion. The vaccine's development focused on preventing HIV-1 infection by inducing both humoral and cellular immune responses against the conserved gag-derived p24 antigen.
