HIV-1 Subtype C gp140 vaccine + MF59 is an experimental vaccine regimen developed for the prevention of HIV-1 infection. It consists of a recombinant gp140 protein derived from a subtype C HIV-1 strain (specifically the TV1 isolate) formulated with the MF59 oil-in-water emulsion adjuvant. The gp140 protein is a truncated form of the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein that includes the gp120 subunit and the extracellular domain of the gp41 subunit, designed to mimic the native trimeric envelope spike and elicit neutralizing antibodies. MF59 is used to enhance the magnitude and breadth of the immune response. This vaccine candidate has been evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials, such as HVTN 048, to assess its safety and immunogenicity in healthy adults, including those previously primed with subtype B envelope vaccines.
