Overview

HIV-CAR-T is an investigational autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy developed by the Institute of Hematology & Blood Diseases Hospital in China for the treatment of HIV-1 infection and AIDS. The therapy involves the ex vivo genetic modification of a patient's own T cells to express CARs that specifically recognize and eliminate HIV-infected cells, typically by targeting the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120. The primary objective of this cell-based immunotherapy is to achieve a functional cure by eradicating the latent viral reservoir and providing sustained viral suppression, potentially allowing patients to remain off antiretroviral therapy (ART). It is currently being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial to assess its safety, tolerability, and preliminary efficacy in patients with HIV-1/AIDS.
