Overview

This refers to an investigational HIV vaccine strategy developed under the sponsorship of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The regimen utilizes a heterologous prime-boost approach consisting of a DNA plasmid prime followed by a recombinant fowlpox virus (rFPV) boost. The DNA vaccine component, which includes plasmids such as pHIS-HIV-B or pHIS-HIV-AE, expresses multiple HIV-1 genes including gag, pol, env, and regulatory genes like tat and rev. The rFPV boost component typically expresses a subset of these genes, such as gag and pol. Designed as a prophylactic candidate, the vaccine aims to elicit HIV-specific cellular immune responses (T-cell responses) in healthy volunteers. While Phase I/IIa clinical trials demonstrated that the vaccine was generally safe and well-tolerated, it showed limited immunogenicity in human subjects despite promising results in non-human primate models.
