HIVIS-DNA is an investigational, multigene, multiclade plasmid DNA vaccine candidate developed by the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI) in collaboration with the Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital, and manufactured by Vecura. The vaccine is composed of seven plasmids encoding multiple HIV-1 antigens, specifically gp160 (Env) subtypes A, B, and C; Rev subtype B; Gag subtypes A and B; and a mutated reverse transcriptase (RTmut) subtype B. HIVIS-DNA is designed to prime the immune system to elicit both cellular (CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell) and humoral (antibody) immune responses against HIV-1. In clinical trials (such as HIVIS01/02, HIVIS03, and HVRRICANE), it has been evaluated primarily in heterologous prime-boost regimens, where HIVIS-DNA priming is followed by boosting with a recombinant modified vaccinia Ankara (MVA-CMDR) vaccine.
