Overview

This experimental adoptive cell therapy involves the infusion of HIV-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) to treat HIV infection. Developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the therapy utilizes CTLs generated ex vivo from the lymphocytes and sibling-supplied dendritic cells of an HIV-negative donor (allogeneic). The primary objective is to bolster the recipient's immune system, particularly in patients with CD4+ T cell counts between 100-350 cells/mm³, by providing functional effector cells capable of recognizing and eliminating HIV-infected cells. This approach aims to overcome the recipient's potential inability to generate an effective endogenous CTL response due to advanced disease.
