Overview

HIVAC-1e is a recombinant live attenuated vaccinia virus-based vaccine engineered to express the gp160 envelope glycoprotein of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). It was developed as a prophylactic candidate for HIV infection. The primary mechanism involves priming the immune system to recognize and mount both humoral and cellular immune responses against the HIV-1 envelope protein. Clinical studies have shown that vaccination with HIVAC-1e in healthy, vaccinia-naive adults induces both T-cell mediated and antibody responses specific to the gp160 antigen, with evidence of durable immunity in some recipients. The vaccine has been evaluated primarily as a prime in prime/boost regimens, often followed by boosting with subunit vaccines such as recombinant gp120 or gp160 proteins[2][6][8][9]. Developed by academic and government research groups including the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases.
