Overview

HivCide-I is an experimental antiviral nanomedicine developed by NanoViricides, Inc. for the treatment of HIV/AIDS. It is based on the company's proprietary nanoviricide platform, which utilizes polymeric micelles (nanomicelles) that are functionalized with specific ligands designed to mimic the CD4 receptor and the CCR5 or CXCR4 co-receptors. These ligands act as decoys for the HIV-1 envelope glycoprotein gp120. When the virus encounters the nanoviricide, it binds to these decoy receptors instead of the receptors on healthy T-cells. This binding event is followed by the disruption or unrolling of the viral envelope by the nanomicelle's flexible polymer structure, leading to the permanent neutralization of the virion. HivCide-I is specifically the injectable formulation of this technology, intended to provide a high systemic concentration of the therapeutic to combat both circulating virus and potentially viral reservoirs.
