Overview

HIVDCVac is an autologous dendritic cell-based therapeutic vaccine developed by the Statens Serum Institut for the treatment of chronic HIV-1 infection. The therapy involves harvesting a patient's own monocytes, differentiating them into mature dendritic cells in vitro, and pulsing them with a cocktail of ten specific HIV-1 peptides. These peptides include HLA-A2-restricted CTL epitopes from Gag, Env, Pol, Vpu, Vif, and gp41, as well as the universal T-helper epitope PADRE. The goal is to induce or enhance cellular CD8+ and CD4+ T-cell immunity against subdominant, conserved viral epitopes, thereby reducing viral load and delaying the need for antiretroviral therapy (ART). The vaccine is administered subcutaneously and has been evaluated in Phase I clinical trials.
