HIVIS (HIV Vaccine Immunogenicity Study) refers to a prime-boost HIV-1 vaccine regimen developed through a collaboration between the Karolinska Institutet, the Swedish Institute for Infectious Disease Control (SMI), and the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS). The regimen typically consists of a multi-plasmid DNA vaccine (HIV-DNA) as a primer, followed by a recombinant Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) virus vaccine (HIV-MVA) as a boost. The DNA component contains a mixture of plasmids encoding HIV-1 subtypes A, B, and C antigens, including Gag, Pol, Env, and Rev. The MVA boost expresses similar antigens to broaden and strengthen the cellular and humoral immune responses. The regimen has been evaluated in several Phase I and II clinical trials in East Africa, exploring various delivery methods such as intradermal injection with electroporation to enhance immunogenicity.
