Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Hjertemagnyl is a fixed-dose combination medication consisting of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and magnesium oxide, primarily utilized in Northern European markets for cardiovascular protection. Acetylsalicylic acid serves as the active antiplatelet agent, exerting its effect by irreversibly acetylating the serine residue of the cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) enzyme. This action inhibits the synthesis of thromboxane A2, a critical mediator of platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction, thereby reducing the risk of arterial thrombosis. Magnesium oxide is incorporated into the formulation as an antacid buffer to mitigate the gastric mucosal irritation and dyspepsia commonly associated with chronic salicylate therapy. The drug is indicated for the secondary prevention of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, including myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke, in high-risk patients.
