HK532-IGF-1 is a proprietary human cortical neural stem cell line genetically engineered to express insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). Developed as a cellular therapy for Alzheimer's disease, these cells combine the neuroprotective and synaptogenic properties of IGF-1 with the regenerative potential of human neural stem cells. HK532-IGF-1 cells preferentially differentiate into gamma-aminobutyric acid-ergic (GABAergic) neurons, a subtype implicated in Alzheimer's disease, and produce increased levels of vascular endothelial growth factor. In preclinical studies, the transplantation of HK532-IGF-1 demonstrated neuroprotection against beta-amyloid-induced toxicity, enhancement of memory and learning in animal models of Alzheimer's, and a reduction of amyloid plaque pathology. The mechanism of the therapeutic effect is both direct, via local release of IGF-1, and indirect, through paracrine support for endogenous neurons and modulation of neuroinflammation.
