Overview

HLA-matched multivirus-specific T cells (VSTs) is an investigational off-the-shelf adoptive cellular immunotherapy developed by Baylor College of Medicine. The therapy consists of allogeneic cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) derived from healthy donors that have been expanded and trained to recognize specific antigens from five common opportunistic viruses: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus (CMV), adenovirus (AdV), BK virus (BKV), and JC virus (JCV). These VSTs are stored in a bank and selected for patients based on partial HLA matching. The primary indication is the treatment of persistent or drug-resistant viral infections in immunocompromised individuals, particularly those who have undergone allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) or received CAR-T cell therapy. The therapy works by recognizing and killing virus-infected cells through the specific targeting of viral antigens. The commercialized version of this multi-virus T-cell technology is known as posoleucel.
