HLC-001 is an allogeneic cell therapy product consisting of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) derived from the human umbilical cord. Developed by the Japanese biotechnology company Human Life Cord Care, HLC-001 is designed to leverage the innate immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties of MSCs to treat severe immune-mediated and inflammatory conditions. The therapy is primarily being investigated for idiopathic pneumonia syndrome (IPS), a life-threatening pulmonary complication following allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), as well as acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) and hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). HLC-001 is administered via intravenous infusion, where the cells are thought to migrate to sites of inflammation and secrete paracrine factors that suppress excessive immune responses and promote tissue repair. Clinical data from Phase II trials in Japan have suggested that HLC-001 may improve overall survival in patients with steroid-refractory or steroid-dependent IPS.
