HLCR011 is an allogeneic induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cell-derived retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell therapy jointly developed by Sumitomo Pharma and HEALIOS. The therapy is designed to treat retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) tears, a condition where the RPE layer is torn, contracted, or defective, often as a complication of age-related macular degeneration. HLCR011 works by transplanting healthy RPE cells derived from allogeneic iPS cells into the subretinal space to repair or replace the damaged RPE layer. This regenerative approach aims to maintain or restore the health of overlying photoreceptor cells and stabilize visual function in patients for whom no established treatments currently exist. The program is currently in Phase 1/2 clinical development in Japan, with the first patient transplantation occurring in August 2024.
