Overview

HLP-4-2 is a purified pectic polysaccharide with a molecular weight of approximately 19.7 kDa, isolated from the Mongolian medicinal plant *Hypecoum leptocarpum*. Its chemical structure is characterized by the presence of homogalacturonan (HG) and rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) domains. HLP-4-2 is being researched as a potential therapeutic for ulcerative colitis (UC). Its primary mechanism involves the modulation of the gut microbiota, specifically by promoting the growth of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria such as *Prevotella* and reducing the prevalence of pathogenic bacteria like *Klebsiella*. This microbial shift results in elevated levels of SCFAs (particularly propionic and isobutyric acids), which help maintain the intestinal barrier, preserve goblet cells, and suppress the production of proinflammatory cytokines, thereby reducing intestinal inflammation.
