It is engineered to selectively target the myostatin/activin pathway, specifically inhibiting MSTN while showing minimal activity against related ligands such as Activin A, Activin B, and BMP9. This selectivity is intended to promote skeletal muscle growth and preserve lean mass with a reduced risk of off-target effects compared to broader inhibitors like bimagrumab. HM500197 is primarily being investigated as a combination therapy with incretin-based weight loss agents to prevent the lean mass loss often associated with significant weight reduction in patients with obesity.
